A Unique History
The area known as Lake Worth today was first settled in 1885 by former slaves, Samuel and Fannie James. The James’ began with 187 acres but eventually acquired hundreds of acres more of additional land that makes up most of what is known as Lake Worth today. The name was changed to Lucerne in 1910, and was officially incorporated in 1912 with the area’s first residents being mostly farmers. The name Lucerne was later changed after the United States Post Office refused to accept it because there was already a town called Lake Lucerne in Dade County. The name Lake Worth was then agreed upon and was derived from the name of the lake the town borders to its east, today the lake is known as the Lake Worth Lagoon.
The city’s economic status began to rise after WWII when many pensioners, especially those from Quebec, Finland, and Germany moved to the area and brought their culture and customs with them. Lake Worth has since been shaped and influenced by the various cultures that have inhabited the area before and since its inception.
